Vikingsholm and Emerald Bay

Distance: 5.2 miles out and back, or a 1 mile out and back to Vikingsholm estate
Difficulty: Moderate with some elevation change and a fairly long trail length
Fees and Permits: Parking fee
Map: National Geographic Lake Tahoe Basin Map

This easy South Lake Tahoe hiking trail will take you by some of the most scenic and well known sights of Lake Tahoe, right along the shore. Start at the Vikingsholm trailhead off of Route 89 at Emerald Bay about 18 miles south of Tahoe City. This is one of the most popular and crowded areas of Tahoe in the summer, so expect some company if doing this hike in midsummer.

Vikingsholm Trail

From the parking area on route 89 follow the well-traveled dirt road that begins to the left of the large rock slab downhill toward the shores of Emerald Bay. After a half-mile and a few switchbacks you will come to the historic Vikingsholm estate. Most visitors are content to roam around the grounds of the estate, and the crowds will thin the farther you go away from the main estate. A great way to get away from the crowds is to head north along the Rubicon trail out to Emerald Point. From the main building at Vikingsholm head north along the lakeshore and pick up the Rubicon trail. The Rubicon trail runs along the north shore of Emerald Bay out to Emerald Point and then continues north to Ruibicon Point. The section from Vikingsholm to Rubicon Point is about 2.5 miles and relatively flat. This is a great out-and-back hike for people of all fitness levels.
