Eagle Lake

Eagle Lake Trail

Distance: 2 miles out and back
Difficulty: Moderate to challenging, with some rocky trail and semi-steep sections
Fees and Permits: Parking fee, or you can park for free along Highway 89, and a required but free wilderness permit is available at the trailhead
Map: National Geographic Lake Tahoe Basin Map

At the center of Emerald Bay, on the non-lake side of the road, is the popular Eagle Falls trailhead. It is one of the main points of access to the vast Desolation Wilderness, and the first section up to Eagle Falls can be busy, but the number of people drops quickly the farther you venture from the trailhead. Permits are required to enter Desolation Wilderness and are available at the trailhead. On your way to Eagle Lake you will pass upper Eagle Falls, continue up the trail approximately 1 mile to Eagle Lake. The lake is a great place for a quick picnic. You can return the way you came, or explore deeper into Desolation Wilderness.

TMS Recommends Bringing: Lake Tahoe Hiking Map and a good pair of hiking shoes
